Parabeton – Pier Luigi Nervi and Roman Concrete
Concrete buildings from modern Italy and the eternal Rome.
The film Parabeton presents 20 concrete buildings by Pier Luigi Nervi (1891-1979) from all over Italy, juxtaposed with 9 buildings from the classic Rome. Nervi’s light and elegant concrete roofs and vaults create such magnificent spaces that also at the twentieth example is complete breathtaking.
In addition to examining Nervi’s aesthetics the buildings are put in the context of ‘The Eternal Rome’ and in the contrast between Classicism and Modernism. It questiones if the Modernist buildings are maintained by the present and whether the twentieth century masterpieces will have the same force of life as the ancient Roman buildings. Some workplaces, factories, the famous ‘Palace of Labour’ in Turin seem to be near to collapse already, while in addition sports arena are still towering to post-Berlusconi Italy.
Professor and architect Olga Popovic Larsen will introduce the film.
